Kaufman, Bel

(b. 1911)
   American author and educator, of German origin. Born in Berlin, she grew up in Russia. Her grandfather was Sholem Aleichem. She studied at Hunter College and Columbia University, and taught in New York high schools. From 1964 she taught in several New York colleges. Her works include Up the Down Staircase.
